Gray Matter officially formed in the summer of 1983 but Geoff Turner, Mark Haggerty and Dante Ferrando had been playing in bands since their early middle school days. The band's first album, "Food For Thought," was originally released on R&B records in 1985 while the members were still in high school and continues to stand out as a classic teenage punk album. This edition of the "Food For Thought" LP was re-cut from original source tapes and is being re-issued on colored vinyl.

Contemporary Music is the second Slowdime release by the Washington, D.C., sextet the Sorts. This CD contains seven superbly played funk-dub-jazz instrumental tunes. The band has a relaxed feel and articulate tasty phrasings, they write creative compositions, and they manage to play their music with a powerful and understated aggressiveness. Five of the tunes on Contemporary Music are originals, one is a cover of Ornette Coleman's "Una Muy Bonita," while another is a version of Kool and the Gang's "Let the Music Take Your Mind." Title Tracks emerged in mid-2008 from the still-smoldering ashes of Georgie James with an almost preternaturally focused mission statement. This solo project of John Davis has an almost scientific approach to power pop songwriting, where bits and pieces and diverse influences explode and fall into place with a kind of Tetris-esque satisfaction. Both tunes on this 45 are culled from such past experiences in bands like Q and Not U and the aforementioned Georgie James; a holy-grail stocked record collection; a savant-like literacy in power pop; and a moonlighting gig as a radio disc jockey.

After two demo tapes and two seven inches here you have their brand new third Ep, released in time for their second European tour in summer 2009. On this record you will find 7 new songs and a re-recorded version of “La Calle Es Mia”, originally released on their second demo tape (Adult Crash, 2008). The final release of the East Coast's quintessential hardcore punk band, "Salad Days" offers a glimpse into the future of Ian MacKaye's prolific recordings while maintaining the fire and rage of Minor Threat's initial albums. The three songs, slower than the band's previous tracks, are by no means slow, but do give MacKaye a chance to take his first tentative steps toward singing, moving beyond his signature blend of screaming and speaking. The cover "Good Guys Don't Wear White" is an amusing fit, while the music of the two originals is more inventive, as in "Salad Days," which uses acoustic guitar and chimes. More There concentrates, for the most part, on its guitar composition, laying out slanted dynamics of clean, ringing, sweeping chords, and arpeggios, with strangled, emotive vocals threading through these constructions. The results fall somewhere between the lighter side of D.C. hardcore and the less pop side of bands like Tsunami. While More There is occasionally a bit of a snooze, it's a solid record nonetheless. Driven by the same ravenous hate and blood thirsty brutality of Discordance Axis and Assuck, Burial Year are paving a new path straight through the filthy depths of todayUs slowly decaying hardcore and metal compost pile. "Pestilence" is the most challenging and technical album Burial Year members have released to date, featuring an extremely rhythmic heavy foundation, complex metallic riffing, and politically charged venomous words. Burial Year simply is a combination of hardcore mentality fused with metal brutality.

In early 1981 Minor Threat made their first trip to the studio. The band recorded all of the songs that they had written in the short time they had been together, but were apparently unsatisfied with their performance and never bothered to do a final mix of the tape. Instead they went back into the studio a month later and recorded what would become their debut, the 8-song eponymous 7"EP (Dischord #3). The tape of the first demo was discovered when Dischord started work on the 'Twenty Years of Dischord' boxset. Ian MacKaye and Don Zientara mixed the tape in December of 2001, but the release was shelved by the label while work was being done on the boxset. The rough mix of this first demo has appeared on bootlegs over the years, but this is the first time that the master tapes have been made available.

The Pupils are a duo consisting of Daniel Higgs and Asa Osbourne from the band Lungfish. From Higgs electronic solo project Cone of Light, Asa's collaboration in Tear Jerks, and the poetry of Higgs and Mitchell Feldstien the members of Lungfish have always been renowned for their extracurricular artistic endeavors. Lungfish are still going strong, but between albums Dan and Asa have recorded this beautiful and gripping album. Fans from within and out of the cult of Lungfish will not be unmoved.

If Lungfish is guilty of anything, according to critics, it is sounding like themselves over and over. While this is kinda true to a certain extent, it must be understood that the band is probably aware of this too, and, if anything, many would consider this to be one of the band's strengths. Love Is Love while still fitting the formula of past releases, does manage to inject a bit of new life here. The Evens are Fugazi’s Ian MacKaye and ex-Warmer Amy Farina, with MacKaye on baritone guitar and Farina on drums. Both of them sing (quite well, actually). Comparisons to Yo La Tengo’s wry, disarming slices of life aren’t unwarranted, and the Evens share an engaging candor reminiscent of Hoboken’s first family of indie rock. The Evens is a quiet, low-key affair, defined mainly by the duo’s gentle harmonies and Farina’s skittering but smart drumming rather than by any academic pop aesthetic. Orginally released in 1994, the bands’ only full length has been remastered 10 years later at Silver Sonya by Chad Clark with 2nd 7" as a bonus.The band only existed briefly but had a tremendous impact on post-hardcore music. They play 20-30 minute, loud, epic songs. Producing a bombastic stew of druggie bass drone, pulsating rhythmic sex beats, and brain piercing acid flashback guitar leads. No two Earthless shows are ever the same, so the four song LP was recorded live in the studio to capture the live dynamic that they are most suited for. Earthless draw influences from bands such as The Groundhogs, Amon Duul2, Black Sabbath, Hawkwind and Jimi Hendrix's more freaked out instrumentals.
